Everyone has swollen hands from time to time, for example when walking. But how come this actually?
What Causes Swollen Hands?

When you looked at your hands, have you ever noticed that your rings are pushing into your skin or that  your fingers appear swollen and have changed color? Why does that happen? There are several possible causes of swollen hands.

Most are not serious at all, but others can be a sign of a condition. We explain it all below.

Why do I suffer from swollen hands?

This phenomenon is more common than you might think. Sometimes you have walked for a while, you look down and find that your hands are swollen. This has to do with your circulation. During exercise, more blood is pumped to your hands, causing them to swell.

If, on the other hand, there is only one swollen finger, it may be due to some form of injury or infection. In any case, always check that the swelling is not caused by a problem in the joints. Let’s take a closer look at this.

  • Cut or collision: Did you hit  your hand on something? Was he trapped in something? Were you bitten by a dog? These events are usually obvious, but sometimes you damage your hand on something without noticing. Then the swelling occurs hours later.
  • Damaged ligament or cartilage:  If your job requires you to regularly perform the same tasks and move your hands over and over again, your fingers may appear swollen at the end of the day. This can be the result of damaged cartilage.
  • Bursitis  (swelling of a bursa that protects and protects your joints from shock): This is a very painful condition because the patient’s fingers swell, especially near the joint. Sometimes a small, painful bump develops.
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome: You are  probably already familiar with this painful condition, which is common among women. It involves pressure on a nerve that runs through the wrist, often causing swollen, numb, and even stiff fingers.
  • Ganglion:  This condition occurs when the upper part of the joint or tendon grows or swells. This can get through your fingers, causing them to expand as well.
  • Infection:  Never forget this possibility. There is a bacterial infection called ‘Streptococcus Aureus’, which can lead to drastic swelling in the fingers. This is painful and can even lead to a fever.
  • Paronychia:  This condition is sure to stand out as it usually affects only one finger. It is a painful infection of the fingernail that causes your fingers to swell – especially around the nail. There may even be pus.
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis:  Unfortunately, this condition is very common, so keep an eye out for it if you’re looking for the cause of your swollen hands. It is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects your joints. It is very common in the fingers, which become swollen and painful.
  • Septic arthritis:  This variant of arthritis is contagious and difficult to distinguish from rheumatoid arthritis because the symptoms are usually the same. So ask a doctor for help with the diagnosis.

Always pay close attention to the symptoms if one or more of your fingers is swollen. Check whether it is a single finger or the entire hand. If your whole hand is swollen, it is usually a circulatory or metacarpal problem.

When it comes to a single finger, first look at your fingernails and then consider whether you have damaged or injured that finger anywhere. It may even have been caused by an insect bite.

However, always make an appointment with your doctor if the swelling lasts longer than five days.

How can I reduce the swelling in my fingers?

Ginger root with a bowl of ground ginger

As we’ve said before, always see a doctor if the swelling in your hands persists for several days. But you can already do something at home with the following tips:

1. Cold and Hot Rosemary Water Baths:  Rosemary is fantastic for reducing swelling in the joints and cartilage. You can mix two stems of this medicinal plant with warm water and then submerge your swollen fingers for three minutes.

Then do the same with a bowl of cold water. Alternating these two temperatures will improve circulation and reduce swelling. To complete this treatment, massage your swollen hands with a few drops of rosemary oil.

2. If you suspect that the swelling in your hands is caused by a bacterial infection,  rub a clove of garlic on the affected area. This plant contains strong antibacterial substances, which help reduce swelling.

3. Ginger Root Link:  This medicinal root can help reduce swelling. First grate a few slices of ginger and mix it with warm water. Dip your swollen fingers in this mixture for a few minutes.

Then remove the grated ginger from the water and press it gently against the affected area. This will definitely help with the swelling.
