Five Home Remedies to Unshrink Shrinked Clothes

A disadvantage of washing clothes is that some clothes shrink. This is because they are made of sensitive materials or because they have not been washed at the right temperature. How can you unshrink your clothes?

Many people ignore the washing instructions on the label in the garment and almost always wash their clothes on a normal wash cycle, without thinking about the consequences. However, when they put these garments back on after washing, they find that they have shrunk or are simply ruined.

The good news, for all of us, is that fortunately there are several home remedies that can help shrink your clothes. In this article, we share the five most interesting home remedies to help you get shrunken clothes back to their normal size.

Pay attention!

1. Conditioner to shrink clothes

To clean

Conditioner for your hair is a good solution to de-shrink woolen garments. Hair conditioner has a similar effect to a normal fabric softener, but the additional advantage is that it can also ensure that clothes regain their normal size.

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup hair conditioner (62 ml)
  • ¼ cup white wine vinegar (optional) (62 ml)
  • Hot water (the amount needed)

Instructions

  • Pour the conditioner into a bowl of warm water and let the garment soak in it for twenty minutes.
  • Then try to stretch the garment with your hands after 20 minutes , until it looks normal again.
  • Then let it dry completely without wringing out the moisture.
  • When it comes to a sweater, we recommend adding a little white wine vinegar to the mixture. This ensures better results.

2. Fabric softener

While fabric softener isn’t exactly recommended right now due to the chemical ingredients it contains, it can help get shrunken clothes back to normal.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup fabric softener (250 ml)
  • 4 cups of warm water (1 liter)

Instructions

  • Mix the fabric softener with the warm water and then soak the shrunken garment in it.
  • Do this for twenty-four hours and then rinse the garment.
  • Then let the garment dry in the sun, without wringing out the moisture. Wait for it to dry completely to see if it has returned to its original size.

3. Baking soda and vinegar

Baking Soda and Vinegar

Baking soda and white wine vinegar can be used in a variety of ways to make everyday tasks around the house a lot easier. These agents can also be used as a natural fabric softener and they can protect your clothes and ensure that garments do not shrink.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons baking soda (20 grams)
  • 2 liters of hot water
  • 1 cup white wine vinegar (250 ml)

Instructions

  • Dissolve the baking soda in a liter of hot water. Then submerge the item of clothing you would like to repair in this mixture.
  • Gently stretch the garment slightly and then let it soak for another hour.
  • Then mix the white wine vinegar with the remaining liter of water and use this mixture to rinse your clothes.

4. Baby shampoo

Baby shampoo is also a good alternative to conventional products to ‘unshrink’ pants and other thick garments. For even better results, we recommend mixing the shampoo with a little hair conditioner.

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup baby shampoo (62 ml)
  • 3 tablespoons hair conditioner (30 grams)
  • Hot water (the amount needed)

Instructions

  • Fill a quarter of a bucket with warm water, then add the baby shampoo and natural conditioner.
  • Soak your shrunken garment in this for 12 hours. Then try to stretch it gently.
  • Then wring out the water and let the garment dry for a while.
  • If you think the clothes are too stiff, try ironing them with a steam iron.

5. White wine vinegar and a hair mask

Rinse clothes

White wine vinegar acts as a natural fabric softener and can protect your clothes. In addition, it can remove stains and dirt and ensures that clothes feel cool.

To “unshrink” certain types of clothing, you can mix white wine vinegar with a little hair mask or anti-tangle cream.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup white wine vinegar (125 ml)
  • ¼ cup hair mask (62 ml)
  • Hot water (the amount needed)

Instructions

  • Dissolve the two ingredients in a bucket of hot water and soak your garments in it for a while.
  • Wait at least half an hour for the ingredients to take effect.
  • After half an hour, try gently stretching your clothes with your hands.
  • Then let the clothes soak for another half hour and then wash as usual.

Remember that the effectiveness of these home remedies depends on the type of garment it is made of and the fabric it is made of. Sometimes, for example, it is impossible to ‘unshrink’ clothing again if the texture of the fabric has completely changed.

To avoid these kinds of problems, always check the care label before putting your clothes in the washing machine.
